ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Hello and welcome to my blog. This is a space for me to share my search for beauty, and post my finds for people I love or for whom I’ve never met. I plan to include interior design loves, travel interests, book reviews, local places that inspire me, snap shots from home life, and (philosophical) rants.

I’ve been dabbling with styling and design since college, when my obsession with HGTV began. Once I moved out of my parents house and the confines of dorm-life, I was inspired to create a home. I also happened to be an urban nomad throughout college and law school, moving almost once a year, which gave me ample opportunity to try new things with my hodge-podge of stuff in different spaces. I made each space my own, with little touches: Indian blankets and pillows bought at a street fair, Moroccan tea cups, discovered in a little shop in Soho. And of course, all the IKEA basics I could afford.

When I moved to Houston to live with my husband, in 2010, we had the challenge of combining our aesthetics.  At first, we were heavily influenced by whatever was on display, the lime green that Crate and Barrel was peddling at the time, or later, the shabby chic/french country vibe that our local Home Goods had going on.  As a result, our spaces changed drastically each time we moved – from Midcentury pop to traditional with a hint of feminine.  I’d like to think we have become more attuned to our true preferences and that our current vibe – somewhere in the realm of Scandi/boho – is a truer reflection of our taste.

This came as a result of almost constant study.  Sometime after our second baby was born, I found myself spending more and more time reading Scandinavian and boho design blogs, or poring over the latest West Elm catalog, or Elle decor magazine.  I slowly learned to discern and distill what I loved from what was merely interesting.

My full time job is caring for our two young children.  I love watching them grow and discover, but I think one of the biggest challenges of motherhood has been the loss of those solitary moments – getting up and getting dressed WITHOUT a dozen interruptions, occasional breaks after work to go to a lecture, or a cafe for an espresso with a girlfriend, wandering around museums or shops.  Slowly, I began to include such excursions into our weekly program.  And with practice, we all began to enjoy them.  (Sure, some days I’m “that mom” – chasing them back to the table and picking up a million crumbs, but they are learning.  My three year old daughter not infrequently asks, “Can we go to a cafe, mama? I want a chocolate croissant.”  Mission accomplished!)

Consider this my experiment in gutsiness.  I hope it inspires.  I hope it adds a corner of beauty to your day.  I hope it is useful and that you can take a DIY suggestion, a simple recipe, a book recommendation and add some priceless luxury to your day, without the luxury price tag.
